Baby Food Magic*

I will tell you this.  Rocco has THE BEST dad in the whole world.

It was a Friday night after a long week of work, I had fallen alseep on the couch while Rocco napped.  Tom was sitting on the couch reading this…

I awoke to the garage door slamming.  In walked Tom with our baby and several bags of groceries.  My heart skipped a few beats when I realized all that had happened without me even slipping into conciousness ONCE.  I wasn’t dreaming.  Tom found the baby food recipes in the back of his new Tyler Florence cookbook.  He told me that he had “turned over a new leaf.”

Rocco was going to have a completely new menu: all organic and fresh foods. All the jars I bought said organic, isn’t that the same thing?  Tommy isn’t the kind of guy who will choose one and make a mass quantity, oh no, he bought the ingredients for ALL of the recipes.  I didn’t tell him that he would still be up at 3 in the morning, after the kitchen had exploded and there were little tupperware containers of baby food everywhere.  I wanted him to experience the “joy of discovery.”

So he set Rocco up in his highchair and they began their “project.”

VERY exciting!

The house smelled AMAZING.

He found appliances that I didn’t even know we had!  Long after our little man had retired for the night, we taste tested all of the food:  sweet peas and mint, brown rice with roasted banana and cinnamon, parmesan & cauliflower puree and our favorite, roasted blueberry and applesauce.  We are considering canning and selling the last one, it goes something like this, “One bite for Rocco, two bites for mommy, three bites for daddy, one bite for Rocco…”

Seriously folks, it’s THAT good.

Gainfully Unemployed

My dad, who has been a detective for the Seattle Police Department my ENTIRE life has been what he likes to call “gainfully un-employed” for 23 days now.  I have been waiting to post something until I got a picture of him in uniform, but I am realizing that that may take me a while so I am just going to do it.

My dad has always been a hard worker, very consistent and extremely ethical.  He was always the first to arrive at the office and really, truly loved his job.  I honor my dad for his 38 years of service and dedication.  I want Rocco to be that kind of guy.  Here’s to a whole lot less work and a whole lot more of this….

I’m a blogging slacker.  I will do better.

I wanted to share a link with you.  If you have some time, watch these Harvard students speak about their religion.  I found it fascinating.  Unfortunately, the girl who represented the Christians did us NO favors.

Here you go!

“It’s an expression!”

Quote of the day, by my little friend Ainsley (4).

I was driving her to school this morning when this conversation took place…

Ainsley: “Katie…do you know ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory?’”
Katie: “Sure do!”
Ainsley: “Katie…’Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ is old school.”
Katie: “Old school?”
Ainsley: “It’s an expression!”

This kid is hilarious.

“Call me when you get there.”

As most of you know, Tommy has 7 younger siblings, most of them boys.  They like to walk to their friend’s houses, go play basketball up at the school, ride their bikes to Subway…boy stuff.  Roseanne, my mother-in-love, always yells to them as they take off, “Call me when you get there!”  The youngest, Jesse, doesn’t miss ANYTHING.  She has heard Ro say this a time or 10,000 and she likes to keep phrases like this in her pocket to pull out on a sunny day, a rainy day, pretty much any old day.  We usually drop our jaws or laugh in response to whatever it is that she has decided to say.

This time it was so appropriate.

Roseanne’s younger sister went to be with the Lord recently, and a day or two later, Ro was looking out the front door: thinking and missing.  Jesse walked up next to her and in the softest voice, said…

“Maybe she’ll call you when she gets there.”

I think that was just what she needed to hear.

A real problem.

I’ve got a storage issue.  Since Rocco was born, we have taken thousands–yes, thousands–of photos.  If he is doing something adorable we just snap away.  Look, look, look!  Quick, get the camera!  No less than 100 shots later, I am left with said problem.  I can’t possibly keep 100 pictures of my darling boy smiling that way.  Or can I?

Here’s an example.

I know these are almost identical and, to be honest, there are about 30 more just like it…but I just can’t hit Delete.

I guess it looks like we will be buying more backup storage.

Can you blame me?

Maybe this isn’t a real problem after all.

Rocco passed out right in the middle of his bottle.  He’s still holding onto it in his sleep.

That’s my boy.

What are your middle names?  Thomas Daniel & Katie Leigh
How long have you been together?  Hmmm.  This is a tough one.  He told his carpool driver that he was going to marry me about 15 years ago.
How long did you know each other before you started dating?  Er.  Maybe 3 or 4 years?
Who asked whom out?  It was him…in a round about way.
How old are each of you?  I’m 11 months ahead of him at 28.
Whose siblings do you see the most?  We see his all of the time!  Never a dull moment with 7 siblings ranging from 23 down to 4.
Which situation is the hardest on you as a couple?  Used to be money.  Now I’d say time.  I married a social butterfly.  :)
Did you go to the same school?  Yes, Jr. high & high school…until we were invited to leave.
Are you from the same hometown?  Pretty much.
Who is smarter?  He’s definitely the smartest.  But I’ve got the common sense.  ;)
Who is the most sensitive?  To each other, we both are.  To the rest of the world?  He is.
Where do you eat out most as a couple?  We tend to have a handful of restaraunts we choose from:  The Keg, La Palmera, China Garden, Mongolian Grill, Mamma Melina’s and Purple.
Where is the furthest you two have traveled together as a couple?  We have been to Boston, NYC and Mexico together.  Europe is next on our list, and Nashville perhaps?  :)
Who has the craziest exes?  Um.  I don’t think this one applies.
Who has the worst temper?  Neither of us really have a temper, but mine flares up when Tom is late and his flares up when he’s “fixing” something.
Who does the cooking?  I do most of it, but it’s really cute when he does, and it generally is delicious.
Who is the neat-freak?  That would be Tom.  He’s ridiculous.  Seriously.
Who is more stubborn?  Me.  [blush]
Who hogs the bed?  He would say me, I say neither.
Who wakes up earlier?  He does.  Somewhere around 5:30.  Ick.
Where was your first date?  I couldn’t tell ya.
Who is more jealous?  Me.  [blushing again]
How long did it take to get serious?  Not very long.  It should have taken longer, that would have been nice…for everyone involved.
Who eats more?  Cheese?  Him.  Chocolate?  Guilty.
Who does the laundry?  Both of us. He takes it down, I sort and wash, we both bring it up, I fold/hang, he usually puts it away.  Good system, we should do it more frequently…to avoid the mountain of clean clothes ALWAYS waiting to be dealt with.  “I just need a black sock!!!”
Who’s better with the computer?  He’s the guy.
Who drives when you are together?  We both do.

We love you little guy.
